The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is launching “Save From Extinction” campaign to raise P100 million to repopulate six species– Philippine eagle, pawikan, tamaraw, cockatoo, dugong, and pangolina.
The DENR said in its recent report that the six species are on the brink of extinction “and there is now a need to launch a breeding program.
The organizers ask individuals to purchase T-shirts and tote bags featuring the six species from DENR’s partner SM retail brand “Kultura”. Another is through donation boxes in the Save from Extinction kiosks or deposits through Banco de Oro ATMs, online banking and over-the-counter BDO branches nationwide.
Ms. Cora Llamas who writes for the Manila Times, said in her article that the 75-year-old global organization International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), found that each of the species has a threshold number indicating that their population is coming back for endangerment status.
In Morong, Bataan the provincial government has been supporting the Pawikan Conservation Center which was established in 2018. On July 26, 2023, the Aboitiz Power adopted and managed the Pawikan Hatchery at Sito Fuerte, Morong town which was made possible through coordination with SAGIP Pawikan.
